About West Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to West Wales last month – me at the wheel, kids in the back bickering over who got the last packet of Quavers, and the sat-nav deciding to throw a proper wobbly just as we hit the twisty lanes near Swansea. We ended up looping around some narrow farm track, heart in my mouth, dodging a flock of sheep that looked as surprised as we were. But honestly, that little mishap just ramped up the anticipation. By the time we crested the hill towards Caswell Bay, I was buzzing – proper holiday excitement, you know?

Pulling up to our luxury top-floor apartment in the Redcliffe, we stepped through the door and bam – floor-to-ceiling panoramic views of Caswell Bay hit us like a wave. It was one of those jaw-drop moments; the sea sparkling right there, uninterrupted from almost every room, including that massive picture window in the bedroom. The open-plan living space felt so bright and airy, with glossy kitchen cabinetry that made me want to whip up a Full English straight away, and wall-mounted cupboards everywhere giving us heaps of storage for all our beach gear. We’d nailed it – perfect for a chilled family break.

First morning, we wandered down to the bay itself, just a stone’s throw away. Caswell’s got that classic Welsh beach vibe: golden sand, gentle waves for the kids to splash in, and enough space to build epic sandcastles without elbowing anyone. I sat there with a thermos of tea, watching them chase each other, feeling that rare parental glow where you think, “Maybe I’m not messing this up entirely.” Lunch was fish and chips from the beach café – greasy, salty perfection wrapped in paper, eaten on the pebbles while gulls eyed us hopefully.

Afternoons blurred into lazy rambles along the coastal path towards Brandy Cove, picnics of pasties and pork scratchings in the grass. One evening, we tried a bit of coasteering – well, the little ones paddled in rock pools while I flailed about pretending to be brave, emerging covered in seaweed and laughing like idiots. Back at the flat, we’d fire up the balcony for barbecues, sea breeze whipping around as the sun dipped over the bay. The full-width balcony was genius; you could lounge with a GandT, feet up, watching surfers catch the last waves.

There was the usual cottage-life chaos, mind – one night the youngest decided 5am was breakfast time, and I spent half an hour chasing a rogue flip-flop that’d blown off the balcony into the car park below. But that’s the joy of it, isn’t it? Those simple pleasures – morning swims at high tide, foraging for winkles on the shore, family board games till bedtime with the window cracked open to the sound of waves. It made me reflect on how we rush about the rest of the year; this trip was a gentle reminder to slow down, breathe in the salt air, and just be.

We left with sandy shoes, full hearts, and plans to return. West Wales has that magic – unpretentious, restorative, and utterly addictive for a family like ours.
