About West Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to West Wales last month – me, my rucksack stuffed with too many jumpers, and the sat-nav deciding to have a mid-journey tantrum just past Cardiff. It kept rerouting us through some cheeky back lanes that felt more like tractor tracks, and we ended up splashing through a puddle the size of a small lake. Still, by the time we crested the hill into Caswell Bay on the Gower Peninsula, the sun was peeking out like it was apologising for the chaos. I was buzzing already, heart lifting at the thought of kicking back in our spot right on the beachfront.

Pulling up to the luxury one-bedroom apartment on the top floor – third floor, mind – I couldn’t wipe the grin off my face. Spacious as anything, with a balcony that basically hangs over the gorgeous sweep of Caswell Bay, and panoramic views from both the lounge and bedroom. First impressions? Pure magic. We dumped our bags, cracked open a cuppa, and just stood there gawping at the waves crashing below. It felt like we’d gatecrashed someone else’s postcard.

Day one, the weather was playing nice – bright blue skies, a gentle breeze off the sea. Perfect for a hike along the coastal path from Caswell towards Brandy Cove. It’s only a couple of miles, but those cliffs! Rugged, wild, with gulls wheeling overhead and the odd seal popping up like it was showing off. We wandered for hours, stopping to skim stones and munch pasties from a little café tucked nearby. I even managed a daft jog down to the beach for a paddle – water freezing, but exhilarating.

Come afternoon two, though, classic British weather decided to gatecrash. One minute we’re plotting a longer tramp to Pwlldu Head, the next it’s lashing down like the sky’s sprung a leak. Plans scuppered, we dashed back to the apartment, soaked to the skin but laughing our heads off. Balcony became our soggy command centre – hot mugs of tea in hand, watching the storm roll in over the bay. It forced a bit of reflection, actually. Sat there, rain hammering the windows, I thought about how I’m always chasing the perfect sunny hike, but these curveballs are what make it real. No Instagram filter needed.

Next morning, it cleared just enough for a gentle stroll along the cliffs to Bishopston Valley – misty, moody, with puddles reflecting the sea like mirrors. We dodged showers, adapted on the fly, turning a potential washout into misty photo ops and impromptu picnics under a brolly. Evenings were bliss: feet up in the lounge, views stretching to the horizon, replaying the day’s soggy triumphs.

By the end of the week, I was hooked on Gower’s walking magic – unpredictable weather and all. That apartment was the ideal base, balcony framing every moody sunrise and dramatic sunset. If you fancy a proper Welsh coastal adventure, pack your wellies and go. You won’t regret it.
