About West Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to West Wales – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and then, just past Swansea, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that had me convinced we’d end up in a cow field. Heart in mouth, we backtracked with the satnav tutting away, but by the time we crested the hill into Mumbles, the clouds parted and there it was: the sea sparkling like a promise. Pulling up to this swish second-floor flat, I was buzzing – those sea views hit you right away, all that endless blue from the balcony, and inside it was pure cosiness with a modern vibe that screamed ‘kick back and unwind’. Perfect spot for five of us, though it was just me, my mate Dave, and his two lads this time.

First order of business? Raid the local shops for holiday feast supplies. Mumbles is a gem for that – popped into the village market on Oystermouth Road, grabbing fresh crab claws, plump prawns, and crusty bread that still smelled of the bakery oven. Back at the flat, with its slick kitchen kitted out nicely, I fancied myself a proper chef. Picture this: me, apron on (okay, a tea towel tucked in), attempting to steam those crabs while Dave manned the BBQ on the balcony. Disaster struck when I overdid the garlic butter – it turned into a frothy mess that set off the smoke alarm. We laughed till we cried, windows flung open to the sea breeze, and salvaged it with a heroic lemon squeeze. Paired with a chilled white from the offy, it was messy perfection, watching the waves crash below.

Evenings were pub heaven. Strolled five minutes to the Pilot Inn, that classic seafront boozer with outdoor tables where you can almost taste the salt. Pints of Brains pulled crisp, and their fish and chips? Golden batter, chips fat and fluffy, peas mushy just right. Dave demolished a seafood platter while the lads tucked into burgers, and we nattered about nothing till closing. Next night, The Mermaid down the road – proper Welsh grub, lamb cawl that warmed the cockles, followed by bara brith sticky with butter. I even snuck in a solo lunch at a café by the pier, scoffing cockles and laverbread, that salty seaweed mush that’s an acquired taste but grows on you like barnacles.

One morning, I tried posh nosh at home: sourced mackerel from the fishmonger near the green, grilled it simply with herbs from a pot on the balcony. Turned out alright, actually – flaky, fresh, with a side of new potatoes boiled in sea-salted water. Sat there reflecting over coffee, feet up, thinking how daft it is rushing through life back home when a week of faffing in the kitchen and propping up pub bars feels this restorative. Mumbles fed us body and soul; those views just the icing.

By the end, we’d waddled home fatter, happier, plotting the next trip. If you’re after a foodie bolt-hole with sea on tap, this corner of West Wales delivers.
