About West Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to West Wales – or rather, the comedy of errors that got me there. I’d set off from Swansea bright and early, fancying myself as some intrepid explorer with a thermos of tea and a playlist of sea shanties. But no, about halfway along the winding coast road towards the Gower Peninsula, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly. It directed me down what turned out to be a narrow farm track, complete with sheep glaring at me like I’d gatecrashed their breakfast. There I was, reversing into a hedge with a tractor bearing down, feeling like the world’s daftest tourist. A quick U-turn and a sheepish laugh later, I was back on track, heart racing but buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation. What lay ahead? Sunlit fields, salty air, and a proper break from the daily grind.

Pulling into the peaceful grounds of this retreat in North Gower felt like stepping into a postcard. It’s a first-floor apartment, all beautifully presented with that effortless character you get in these Gower hideaways – think refined cosiness amid rolling countryside and those endless open skies of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From the moment I unlocked the door, it was love at first sight: views over the gardens that stretched out like a green quilt, birdsong filtering through the windows, and not a hint of rush-hour stress in sight. I dumped my bags, cracked open a window, and just... breathed. This was it, the promise of doing sod all, and loving every second.

The joy of the next few days was in the sheer laziness of it all. Mornings started late, with me padding out to the communal gardens in slippers and a robe, mug of coffee in hand. I’d claim a sunny spot on a bench, surrounded by wildflowers and the hum of bees, and lose myself in a dog-eared paperback – some frothy crime novel that didn’t tax the brain. No deadlines, no emails, just the rustle of pages and the odd butterfly flitting past. Lunch was a faff-free affair: cheese on toast from the well-stocked kitchen, eaten al fresco while watching clouds drift over the hills. Afternoons blurred into hazy naps on the sofa, or gentle wanders around the grounds, spotting rabbits in the undergrowth and letting my mind wander even more.

One evening, as the sun dipped low and painted the sky in that impossible Welsh pink, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Sat there with a GandT, feet up, I realised how knackered I’d been from life’s treadmill. Here, in this tucked-away spot, time slowed to a crawl – no need to tick boxes or chase horizons. It was just me, the garden’s quiet magic, and the bliss of bugger all on the agenda. Sure, the Gower’s got its dramatic cliffs and sandy coves just a short hop away if you fancy a stroll, but honestly? I barely left the grounds. Why would I, when slowing down felt this good?

By the time I packed up, I was recharged, grinning like an idiot. West Wales worked its spell – proof that sometimes the best holiday is the one where you do precisely nowt. Can’t wait to go back and do it all over again.
