We’d only been on the road for about twenty minutes when the sat-nav decided we’d arrived, which would’ve been handy if we’d actually been anywhere near the cottage. Instead we found ourselves parked outside someone’s garage in a housing estate, staring at a wheelie bin while the voice cheerfully announced our destination. After a quick u-turn and a bit of squinting at road signs, we finally pulled up outside the little two-bed cottage, tucked just a short walk from the beach in West Wales.

The moment we stepped inside, the day seemed to slow right down. Sunlight was already pouring through the front windows, catching on the simple furniture and making the whole place feel warm and welcoming. We dumped our bags, kicked off our shoes, and didn’t bother unpacking properly—there didn’t seem much point when the sofa looked that inviting. Within half an hour we were sat outside with mugs of tea, listening to the faint sound of waves and wondering why we’d ever thought rushing was necessary.

The next morning set the tone for the rest of the stay. We wandered down to the beach with a couple of books and an old blanket, fully intending to “do the sights,” but ended up staying put for hours. The sand was warm underfoot, the sea was that particular shade of grey-blue you only seem to get round here, and before long we were both stretched out, half-reading, half-dozing. Every so often one of us would sit up to watch a dog chasing a ball or a couple strolling past with ice creams, then we’d lie back down again, perfectly content to do nothing at all.

Back at the cottage the days followed the same gentle pattern. Mornings began with coffee on the little patio, afternoons drifted between short beach walks and long stretches of reading in the sunshine, and evenings were spent with the doors open, letting the breeze move through the rooms. We cooked simple meals, played a few rounds of cards, and talked about nothing in particular. It felt strangely luxurious to have nowhere to be and nothing that urgently needed doing.

I caught myself, at one point, checking my phone out of habit and then putting it straight back down again. There was something oddly reassuring about realising the world could carry on without me for a few days. The cottage didn’t demand anything from us except that we slow down, and the beach, just minutes away, offered the same invitation every time we stepped outside.

By the time we left, the sat-nav fiasco already felt like it belonged to another holiday entirely. We’d come expecting a change of scenery and ended up with a change of pace instead—quiet mornings, sunny afternoons, and the rare pleasure of simply being still.
