About West Wales
We'd been dreaming of a quiet getaway to West Wales for months, just me and Sarah, escaping the daily grind for some proper downtime. The drive from Swansea was meant to be a breeze, but typical me – I took a wrong turn near Three Crosses, about 3 miles out, and ended up on a narrow lane that had us laughing nervously as brambles scraped the car. "This is why we shouldn't rely on my sense of direction," I chuckled, as we finally spotted the place nestled in the Gower Peninsula, those uninterrupted sea views hitting us like a welcome hug. First impressions? Magic. The sun dipping over the waves, the air crisp with that salty tang – we were hooked before we'd even unpacked.

It's one of those delightful holiday homes, cosy and unpretentious, with off-road parking for two cars (handy after our little detour) and space for our well-behaved dog, Monty, who was already sniffing out adventures. Stepping inside, the kitchen greeted us like an old mate – fully kitted out for rustling up a feast, which we did that first night with local fish from a nearby market. The utility room next door had all the bits: washing machine, tumble dryer, fridge, the lot, so no excuses for not keeping things shipshape amid cottage chaos.

We'd flop into the dining room for meals, plenty of seats for two (plus Monty under the table), then sink into the sitting room with its sea-gazing windows. Mornings started slow: brewing tea, watching gulls wheel over the bay, maybe a gentle stroll to the cliffs at Mewslade or a potter along the sandy stretches of Tor Bay, both just a short drive away. No grand plans, just simple pleasures – foraging for winkles on the shore, picnics with pasties from the village shop, and evenings wrapped in blankets as the tide rolled in.

There was chaos, mind. Monty decided the sofa was his throne, shedding fur everywhere, and I managed to flood the kitchen sink attempting a Welsh cake experiment (pro tip: don't multitask batter and dog walks). Sarah just rolled her eyes fondly – that's the joy of it, isn't it? No schedules, just us muddling through with cups of tea and daft mishaps. One evening, as we sat with the windows open to the sound of waves, I had a quiet moment reflecting on how we'd got so caught up in life back home. Here, staring at that endless sea, it felt like permission to just breathe. No kids, no rush – a reminder that sometimes the best holidays are the ones where you do bugger all but feel utterly content.

By week's end, we were plotting a return. Gower's got that pull – wild coasts, hidden coves, and spots like this that make you feel miles from anywhere, yet right at home. If you're after a relaxed couple's break, pack your wellies and let West Wales work its charm.
