it is such a treat to stay in the lovely stable cottage. it is immaculate, beautiful, cosy and very romantic. with a four poster bed, a fairytale babbling brook running alongside, a gorgeous log burning stove and beautiful nature all around, it is a truly idyllic spot that sleeps up to four guests. this is a cottage with a fascinating history. as you walk through the cottage from room to room, you will be thinking of how it was in days gone by. stable cottage was originally built to house the horses and carriages that carried the landed gentry to and from the pontardawe country estate. the kitchen was once a saddle room, the lounge was where the carriage horses slept, the twin bedroom was the groom’s quarters and the master bedroom was the estate office. here it is said that the lord of the manor conducted romantic liaisons with local ladies as well as collecting rent from his tenants! the hallway was where the carriages were parked. a pair or chestnut carriage horses called william and john lived in the cottage in 1914. in the same year a sale was held at the farm. among the items were a wagonette with a detachable hood by fuller of bath, a carriage foot warmer, a dog cart by vezey of bath, a governess cart and a brougham by phillips of neath. all of these items would have been housed in stable cottage.

About West Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to West Wales – we’d been buzzing with excitement for weeks, dreaming of ditching the daily grind for some proper cottage downtime. Me and the missus, just us two on a relaxed break, no kids or chaos this time. But typical us, we hit a snag right out the gate. About halfway there, near Swansea, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us looping down some narrow lane that barely fit the car. We ended up nose-to-nose with a flock of sheep, horns blaring like we were in a bad rom-com. Laughed our heads off as we reversed for what felt like miles, finally back on track with muddy tyres and a story to tell.

Pulling up to the cottage, though, all that faded away. First impressions? Magic. Tucked alongside a fairytale babbling brook, with nature wrapping around it like a hug, it looked immaculate and ever so cosy – the sort of spot that screams romance but works just as well for a chilled family vibe if you’ve got little ones in tow. It sleeps up to four, perfect for that. And what a history! You wander from room to room, and it’s like stepping into a bygone era. This place was built for the horses and carriages ferrying the local gentry to the nearby Pontardawe Country Estate. The kitchen? Once a saddle room. Lounge was the horses’ quarters – can you imagine chestnut lads William and John snoring away in 1914? Twin bedroom for the groom, master as the estate office where the lord apparently had a bit of fun with the ladies while collecting rents. Hallway parked the carriages, like that fancy wagonette from Fuller of Bath sold off at a farm auction that year. Makes you smile, picturing it all – adds such character without any pretension.

We dumped the bags and straight into cottage mode. First night, lit the gorgeous log burner, cracked open a bottle of wine, and just listened to the brook gurgle outside. Bliss. Days blurred into simple pleasures: lazy mornings with brews in bed (that four-poster is something else), then ambling down to the nearby canal for a gentle walk – Pontardawe’s got these brilliant towpaths, perfect for spotting herons and holding hands without a care. Picnicked by the water with cheese from the local deli and fresh bread, feeling all smug about our low-key life.

Of course, cottage chaos crept in – light-hearted stuff, mind. The Aga in the kitchen took some mastering; first attempt at scones came out more like hockey pucks. “Romantic ruin,” I chuckled, scraping them into the bin while she teased me mercilessly. But that’s the joy, innit? No schedules, just faffing about, reading by the stove, maybe a dip in the brook if you’re brave (we weren’t). One evening, we wandered to the community park nearby, kicked a ball about like daft kids, then pub grub at the local – nothing fancy, just hearty pies and a pint, chatting with regulars about the area’s rugby tales.

Sitting there now, reflecting back, it hit me: we’re so caught up in the rush sometimes, forgetting how these little escapes recharge the soul. No grand adventures needed – just the brook’s whisper, a crackling fire, and each other. West Wales worked its charm; we left lighter, promising to return for more of that sweet, simple magic.
